The most common mode is voice communication, which is done by using a microphone and speaker to transmit and receive sound waves. Other modes include Morse code, which transmits messages in the form of short pulses of light; radioteletype (RTTY), which transmits messages in the form of long pulses of light; and various digital modes that transmit data over a radio wave.
